ABC is messing with my Sanity

Anyone who was witness to the TERRIBLE Apr.21/06 PrimeTime segment on Stepfamilies, are welcome to leave comments here.

Well...it appears that it isn't over!!

It seems as though Kyle has decided that she was treated terribly by ABC and all involved in the April 21, 2006 Primetime 'News' Stepfamilies Segment.

Reflection is a wonderful thing!! Personally I hope this is an accurate article. Kyle deserved to be protected, just like any other child who is in an abusive environment. A Mulitimillion dollar company like ABC, &/or Disney and all involved should have known better and acted in the best interest of an innocent child instead of caring more about their ratings.

http://www.pressrepublican.com/breakingnews/local_story_051114227.html

Almost 2 years have passed, but it will be a cold day in, well you know where, when this disgusting televised beating/verbal abuse of a childevent will be forgotten.

Good Luck Kyle and I hope you are compensated for your pain.

Has it been a Year already??

Well of course nothing has been done about the inexcusable behaviour of the people from ABC! Ok, there might have been (which I doubt), but how would I know. I don't participate in the CENSORSHIP forum on the ABC site. You won't catch me watching Primetime....irresponsible journalism isn't what I like to subject myself to. Diane Sawyer, well, I won't express my views on that one.

If you ignore it, it will disappear. Seems to be a common action among our society. There are still a few of us around. Others WAY more than myself.

I will never forget what I witnessed on April 21, 2006. I will share the story with others. I hope Kyle is doing well, moving forward, and being the WONDERFUL person she is!!

6 Months later and the ABC mods are still ruling with an Iron Fist!

After 6 months, ABC still feels it's necessary to delete threads regarding the outrage resulting from the April 21, 2006 Primetime stepfamily segment. Not surprisingly there have been no answers, admittance of wrong doing, or apologies from ABC. This network obviously feels threatened by the people who won't let them forget their negligence.

Many original posters are still in communication at the IMdB board: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096680/board/threads/

I was asked to put feelers out for posters who made a difference in the forum experience. Some of whom were very outspoken and genuinely cared about the abuse that was exploited for rating by ABC.

"Susan, if you get a chance, could you just update and mention that many of us are still around, and looking for Yank, Chase, Care, and others." asked Nancy from IMdB (also an escapee from the 'other' forum).
There is a link to my email on this blog if any old posters wishes to email me, I will pass along any information to whoever you would like.

Kyle made an appearance over at IMdB as well....I believe she was deleted at the Primetime forum, not surprisingly...damn ABC.

On a personal note, I may not be around or post as much as the others...but I am here and will post here whenever or for whatever anyone would like....well only if it is in regards to this specific subject, and they chant ABC sucks often...heehee

UpDates...

It seems so long ago that this PROBLEM affected so many ABC viewers, and posters at the Censorship Forum (AKA ABC PrimeTime forum). I know that some still post at THAT forum, and some still read up here and at IMDb for any updates....

ABC still SUCKS, and they are just waiting it out until there are no voices left. It may only seem like a few voices are still going, but personally I believe that this has made a imprint on many. People will forever view ABC, um, NEWS as untrustworthy. ABC is seen as a heartless, money hungry, and incompassionate establishment. In general ABC makes this world a little less HUMANE.

I have been updated by Bokim and I have seen some posts on the PrimeTime forum of the cancellation of the post office box that was set up for donations to Kyle. As posted by her mother, there was only one donation sent in.
The most disturbing event was a nasty letter sent to this post office box directed to Kyle from some EVIL person out in this world. From all of the viewers who believe Kyle to be a wonderful, inspiring, brave young lady, SHAME ON YOU. If Kyle or any of her family should come by this blog, please know that the LARGE majority of posters who have been around from the night of the segment, think of Kyle in the highest regard, wish her well and though we may have never met her, she will always hold a special place in our minds and our hearts, and we wish her all the best in life.

Now, staying with tradition, I have been informed by Abuse, that the EVIL ABC forum mods keep deleting the link to the IMDb link:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096680/board/threads/

Nancy at IMDb pointed out a good idea for all of us abused posters to use IMDb as a meeting place, a reunion venue of sorts. Since ABC will not be having PrimeTime on their Fall line-up, the message board will most definitely be shut down PERMANENTLY.

ABC forum Censorship

Apparently, ABC Primetime Mods are delete happy....again.

Taken from the ABC forum by AmyLivonia

"Does ABC censor this page?".
Response by TakingUpTheCause----------------------------Yes.
ABC deletes posts. This message board is routinely groomed to reflect the viewer feedback ABC chooses. This behavior if startling---and some would say unethical---for a news organization, and has drawn a widening spotlight to the practices at Primetime and ABC.
They must have taken the thread title "If it isn't written, it must not be true" literally!

ProfessorBarry Re: ABC *does* censor this forum, dishonestly.
I would not have believed it, had I not happened to witness the deleting of threads this morning by ABC. The content broke none of the stated forum or posting rules, and no explanation was given by ABC.The only conclusion to be drawn is that ABC wishes to give readers of their message boards a false impression of reality, eliminating dicussion that does not work in their favor. If this is not illegal, it is at the least unethical, as stated in the following user post, deleted just this morning by ABC (ABC would be wise to note that I am not alone in archiving the forum).

It was a thread on ABC Primetime Forum, If it isn't written, it mustn't be true...I guess ABC mods believe this.

All The Video Clips I Have Found So Far:

These are From the Yahoo News Website:

This link is for the ENTIRE Good Morning America segment,
Click on the Freeze Frame at the top of the page. There is an advertisement first, than ~8 minutes of interview:

http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/news?ch=61492&cl=403528

I also found this which is a PART of the PRIMETIME show that was aired on April 21/06.
Click on the Freeze Frame at the top of the page. There is an advertisement first, then 4:24 minutes of the segment. (Kyle's part starts at 2:01-3:25, then, 3:55-4:24, really not that much)

http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/news?ch=61492&cl=399878

For me, if I moved my mouse around or tried to fast forward, the video and sound wouldn't be in sync, but that could be my computer, otherwise it played fine.

There isn't video of the 3 small half siblings praying. There is no "reality" t.v. comments that we ALL KNOW Diane Sawyer "teased" the viewers with (sick). Lynn's comparision to a wolf pack is omitted. There is still some parts that display to NORMAL people the terrible situation this was.

This is part of the segment that they left out. The part that ABC, Primetime, Diane Sawyer, the therapists do no see as abuse (part of foxnews):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLQC5zCBSTo&search=diane%20sawyer

This is all I have been able to find so far. The part when Kyle is reunited with her Dad and Step-monster are not included.

Po Bronson - journalist & advocate for justice

Po Bronson has written two articles about the episode we all now know to be the infamous ABC Primetime "Stepfamilies" show. His efforts in his writings demonstrate an ability to be an objective and yet compassionate observer. He is open-minded enough to balance all sides of the issue to the reader in the noble hope that eventually the truth will be revealed. His first article on this topic is entitled "Save Diane Sawyer's Job", and can be said to be a journalist's perspective of another journalist's dilemma with situational ethics.

http://www.pobronson.com/blog/2006/04/save-diane-sawyers-job.html

After the first article, Po was in communication with a member of Kyle's Mom's side of the family, and became enlightened with some revealing information. The second article, "Kyle's Family Speaks - When A Journalist Should Intervene, Part 2", is written with this new perspective in mind:

http://www.pobronson.com/blog/2006/05/kyles-family-speaks-when-journalist.html

All factors thus far appear to indicate that Po Bronson reports fairly and seeks justice at the same time.

Can We, the Viewers, File a Lawsuit?

yankhadenuf said...
Both Wind and Anonymous have mentioned the idea of "civil lawsuit on behalf of viewers" against ABC Primetime for PTSD. Another poster had mentioned that we were all "involuntary voyeurists", and others have posted that we were "helpless witnesses".
I wasn't sure of the idea when I first saw it mentioned on ABC Primetime forum, but I'm beginning to see that the only message ABC will ever understand is $$$. What if a well-known & saavy lawyer stepped forward and filed a class action suit on behalf of the viewers, and then we name Kyle & various child abuse agencies as the beneficiaries of any court winnings or settlement? Is that legally possible?

Found a Clip of the Show, use wisely

I found the same clip I had posted before, but this one is on a much more respectable site, here is the link

Watch it Dr Phil, because we are keeping an eye on you!

A lot of us have been posting at ABC Primetime forum that we are going to watch Dr. Phil's so-called 'Abuse Show" today, and I can just see him salivating in his dressing room right now , calculating the ratio of potential ratings to dollar signs.

I don't want Mr. Phil to get the wrong impression, because we are actually keeping an eye on HIM, not watching his show. We are going to be observers, albeit a bit jaded after Diane's debacle. We are going to be a large group of parents and child advocates making sure that this "Abuse Show" does not, in fact, end up abusing the children even moreso!

We are on to you, Dr Phil and your miserly band of TV psychologists. So even if you portray the most sincere & genuine helping hand to this family & their children you can conjure up, we won't be fooled. Exploitation is still exploitation by any other name.

Fool me once , your fault. Fool me twice, MY fault!

If anyone wants to make their email address public we can list them here. I actually made mine available on this blog earlier today.

Just make sure you use an email with NO personally identifiable information folks! No names or location information. In other words , don't use your work or ISP emails. Once you put your email out there, it is SPAM CITY. So set up an email account that you would be willing to delete eventually . It's best to set up a free account with Yahoo , mail.com , etc. For example, mine is: yankhasenuf@mail.com

What's Worse Child Abuse or a Boob?

If the FCC Can Fine a Network over a Breast, why not for NEGLECT?

Another Great Post from the 'other' forum, had to make sure it was snatched up before the delete happy mods read it:

HERE IS WHAT THE FCC DID TO CBS FOR THE JANET JACKSON WARDROBE MALFUNCTION:
Sep. 22, 2004 -- The Federal Communications Commission fined CBS a record $550,000 Wednesday for violating federal indecency standards after showing pop star Justin Timberlake peel away Janet Jackson's top, exposing her breast to a nationwide television audience during this year's Super Bowl half-time show.
WHAT I SAW HAPPEN TO KYLE IS 100 TIMES WORSE THEN AN EXPOSED BOOB.
AMONG OTHER THINGS I WROTE TO THE GOV OF NY ASKING ABOUT THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS FOR CHILD ABUSE. I REQUESTED HE PROPOSE NEW LAWS IN THAT AREA.

This was on their website. Several good points for child advocacy:

10 Tips for Child Advocates
1. Choose your issue. Personal experiences, community issues, and data on system wide disparities are all sources of potential advocacy issues. Decide what it is you'd like to change.

2. Identify solutions. Prepare a list of possible ways to successfully resolve your issue.

3. Identify supporters. Chances are good that you're not the only person or group advocating for an issue. Talk to parents and parent groups. Use the Internet to find other people or organizations that are working on related issues and seek their assistance. Equally important is choosing a legislator or other government official who will sponsor and be a champion for your issue.

4. Develop a strategy. Will you advocate for change on the local, state, or federal level? Which of the three branches of government-executive, legislative, or judicial, is best positioned to help you achieve your desired outcome? Who will oppose your efforts and what can you do to neutralize the opposition?

5. Frame your message. Work with someone who has experience in public or media relations to help develop and disseminate a clear, concise, and consistent message to help advance your issue.

6. Educate. Attend community, state, and national organization meetings. Offer to be a speaker at a civic group or philanthropic organization, or professional society event. Meet with lawmakers and other government officials. Write letters to your newspaper.

7. Mobilize supporters. Democracy is not a spectator sport! Establish and activate e-mail alert systems and telephone trees to ensure that supporters make their lawmakers aware of the need and support for your initiative.

8. Testify. Offer to tell your story at a public hearing. The personal experiences of constituents are very powerful in convincing government officials to make changes.

9. Don't give up. Often times, it takes more than one attempt to enact a new law or implement changes in public policy. Take Thomas Jefferson's advice, "Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom."

10. VOTE! Pay attention to what candidates are proposing for children…and make your decisions accordingly. Remember, these are the people who will be making decisions about your issue. Take a child with you when you vote to teach them about this important civic duty!

Angry with ABC...Read this EXCELLENT Post!

Copied From Another Forum. One Posters Reasons for Being Angry at ABC.

Why I am angry at ABC:

This Primetime show was heavily promoted in the week leading up to the show. They also did a brief piece on Good Morning America Friday morning, about the show to air Friday evening. The network knew they had uncovered footage of abuse; that's why they built the promos and the hype around THAT footage. They sold a show about "stepfamilies" with footage of ABUSE. They exploited an abused child for ratings.

Cameras were in the home for three years. Hundreds of hours of footage of stepfamily dynamics. However, they built the show around the "isolated incident" of physical abuse caught on tape. Once the show aired, they saved this family's story for last, and kept up the teasers, showing clips of the physical abuse, with the voiceover saying "You won't believe what our cameras captured" "Scenes so disturbing, even our experts were horrified" (then showing the horrified expressions and reactions of the therapists; one putting her head in her hands and shaking her head.) The viewers were told we were about to see something "disturbing". We were warned more than a few times.

Why? Because ABC news knew they had footage of ABUSE, and that it would be explosive. They sold the show on this particular footage, out of the three years and hundreds of hours of tape.

Once they finally showed the dramatic footage, they really went all out. They showed the footage of this girl's physical abuse complete with play-by-play voiceover/narration, slow-mo, and closeups. And they showed the abuse footage over and over, replaying it for viewers. They got a closeup and slow-motion of the stepmother sitting behind the stepfather watching him straddle his daughter and pummel her while screaming at her and calling her "you little b*tch!" and "you dirty little b*tch!". The show edited the footage in order to zoom in on not only the abuse, but also the stepmother reacting behind them during the abuse...her "air punching. The voiceover said, "And watch Lynn's arm and hand motions..." as we were treated to a repeat of her shadowboxing, really getting into her stepdaughter's beating.

ABC has done a sad and terrible disservice to children living with abuse. They chose to put this "Stepfamilies" show together in this way to attract viewers. ABC has been irresponsible and exploitative.

THIS is why I am angry at ABC. They knew they had abuse on tape. They knew it, and they know it now. The choice was made to exploit an abused child for ratings.

Don't think anyone could have said it better!!!

Letter I will be emailing to EVERYONE on my List

Please feel free to copy this letter and use it

On Friday April 21, 2006 ABC's Prime Time aired a segment they implied was about the dynamics of Stepfamilies, this was not the case involving one family. There was physical, verbal, and mental abuse of a teenage girl Kyle Nelson, that in the opinion of many viewers should have been immediately forwarded to the authorities. There was video of her father attacking and punching her while her step-mother 'air punched'. There were numerous vulgarities directed at Kyle by both her father and step mother. The statute of limitations has since run out, therefore there will be no criminal charges filed, the opinion of some, is that ABC purposely sat on this story so they would be able to broadcast it for ratings. ABC has been down playing the extent of abuse, and admitting no wrong doing. As there is little that can be done to the parent and step parent of Kyle, a petition has been set in hopes that ABC will do the right thing and at least provide funding for Kyle's education.

Please sign this petition and help show ABC it is time to do the right thing:

It is important that everyone contact American Psychological Association's (APA) ethics dept. regarding Dr. James Bray, one of the therapists on the Primetime "Stepfamilies" show where the video of the unreported child abuse was aired. ABC sensationalized the video and exploited the child for ratings. Dr. James Bray is running for president of the APA. Dr Bray, as well as the other two therapists , never reported the child abuse video, yet participated in the sensationalism of the video on the air , thereby exploiting the child publicly with utter diregard to the child's right to privacy. Please file your complaint in writing to the APA ethics dept. Please follow the instructions on the link below:

It's Saturday night and I am tired of the ABC forum. I have had so many threads and posts deleted by the CRAZY mods there. I am not computer savvy, so this is an adventure. What a sad reason for an adventure.
